Benny Anthony Harley

ONE OF Go-go’s founding  fathers

Benny Anthony Harley, better known by his stage name Lil Benny, stands as an indelible figure in the history of Go-Go music, a genre deeply rooted in the cultural tapestry of Washington, D.C. From his humble beginnings in the Southeast quadrant of the nation's capital, Benny's journey through music became a testament to the power of talent, perseverance, and the boundless spirit of creativity.

Born on September 26, 1963, Benny's musical odyssey began at a young age, nurtured by the rich melange of sounds that echoed through the streets of his neighborhood.  Benny developed a passion for music through the musical creativity influenced by his father, the late Frank Ford Harley.

Benny would watch his father’s singing group rehearse at home during his early years. At times, Benny would join his father’s group and sing along, using a carrot as a microphone. His mother, Nancy Harley, noticed her son’s musical interest and purchased his first horn. Drawn to the trumpet's call, he immersed himself in the vibrant rhythms of Go-Go, a genre that pulsated with the city's energy.

In the early 1980s, Benny's destiny converged with that of "Rare Essence," a pioneering force in the burgeoning Go-Go movement. As a key member of the band, his electrifying trumpet solos and infectious stage presence became emblematic of the Go-Go sound, earning him a place of reverence among fans and peers alike.

His generosity of spirit and unwavering commitment to his art endeared him to all who crossed his path.

Formed in the mid-1980s, the group showcased Lil Benny's talents as a bandleader and frontman, allowing him to explore new creative avenues within the go-go genre.

Little Benny & The Masters quickly carved out their own niche in the DC music scene, blending elements of go-go with funk, soul, and jazz influences. Throughout their tenure, Little Benny & The Masters collaborated with a diverse array of artists, further expanding their musical horizons. Lil Benny's visionary leadership and innovative approach to composition pushed the boundaries of go-go music, inspiring a new generation of musicians to explore the genre's potential.
